About the Fellowship Programs
As a preeminent center for research and education in orthopaedics and sports medicine, the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute remains a pioneer in medical breakthroughs. We have been responsible for developing advanced surgical methods and procedures to enhance treatment, rehabilitation and recovery for our patients.
In 1973, Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic established a sports medicine fellowship program that is now one of the country’s largest and most respected programs of its kind and has grown to include fellowships in Primary Care Sports Medicine, Adult Shoulder & Elbow Reconstruction and Sports Neurology. Each year this program provides intensive training and research for a select group of the nation’s finest young doctors.
The Fellowship Programs are designed to be an enriching addition to an already extensive orthopaedic education with the goal to develop clinical acumen for orthopaedics, academic experience with research and medical education and leadership development. Sports medicine and orthopaedic proficiency will be gained through intense clinical training at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute.

Adult Shoulder and Elbow Reconstruction Fellowship
This shoulder and elbow fellowship is designed to be mentorship-focused with Dr. Itamura as the main mentor and teacher for the year. Educational focus is on solidifying physical examination skills, operative and non-operative indications and advancing surgical skills in both arthroscopic and open shoulder and elbow procedures. Also, the recent addition of Dr. Lee to the faculty has resulted in more educational opportunities and participation in additional surgical cases.
Fellows typically participate in an average of 700 cases per year. Cases include arthroscopic shoulder and elbow procedures as well as open trauma, reconstruction, arthroplasty and revision cases. Approximately 60% of cases are shoulder and 40% are elbow. Of the total number of cases approximately 40% are arthroscopic.
