Your Procedure

Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute surgery centers strive to make your procedure or surgery as stress-free and calming as possible. Our centers are designed to provide patients with an efficient environment and pleasant atmosphere, minimizing the anxiety that can often accompany medical procedures.

Before Your Procedure

Several days before your procedure, you can expect to be contacted by a Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe representative. They will confirm your insurance coverage and review your financial responsibilities regarding your procedure. If you have any questions or concerns about your insurance coverage, we encourage you to reach out to our office immediately.

You will also get a call from our anesthesiology staff the night before your surgery. They will go over any pre-operative preparation that is necessary and provide answers to any questions you may have.

We will also verify your surgery time and expected arrival time. You must complete and send your pre-anesthesia form prior to surgery. If we do not receive your pre-anesthesia form prior to surgery, we may be required to reschedule your surgery.

Prepare for Your Procedure

We aim to ensure your procedure is as efficient and relaxing as possible. In order to prevent confusion or anxiety, we’ve provided a few steps you can take to prepare for your procedure.

Follow these tips prior to arriving at the surgery center:

  • Make a plan to have an adult drive you home following your procedure
  • Do not take any medication after midnight (unless given special instructions)
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight
  • Tell your physician / anesthesiologist about any blood thinning medications

Day of Your Procedure

Please arrive an hour before your procedure is scheduled. Your family or friends may wait for you in the lobby and your physician will speak to them following your procedure. Prior to your procedure, you will have the opportunity to meet with your anesthesiologist and ask any questions.

Keep these in mind for your procedure:

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Make sure your outfit accommodates any bandages
  • Shower prior to your procedure and remove any makeup, lotions, oils, perfumes, etc.
  • Do not bring any jewelry or other valuables to the center
  • Bring your government issued pictured I.D. and insurance card(s)
  • Have your advance payment for any co-pays or deductibles prepared
  • Bring your contact lens case or glasses case (if necessary)
  • Provide a list of prescription and non-prescription medications

After Your Procedure

After your procedure, you can begin your post-procedural diet with clear liquids. You should avoid solid foods until after the first four to six hours. If your doctor has provided specific instructions on what to eat or medications to take, make sure you follow these guidelines, as well as any instruction on activity and rest.

Do NOT drive a car, drink alcohol, operate machinery, smoke or perform similar activities during the first 24 hours following your procedure.

Feeling lightheaded, fatigued, dizzy or even mild pain is not unusual following your procedure. Keep an eye on your symptoms and let your physician know immediately if any severe symptoms start to develop.
